Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty, Forest Health
Assistant Professor, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Kentucky. This is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment in the Extension Title Series. Anticipated starting date is October 1, 2018.
Ph.D. degree in sciences related to forest health such as ecology, forestry, entomology or pathology. At least one degree in forestry, plant sciences, or natural resources required.
The position is 70% extension, 30% teaching. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of how to apply science to address critical ecological, economic, and social issues associated with forest health. The successful candidate will be expected to evaluate stakeholder and forest health needs to develop effective extension programs using a wide range of educational tools and to develop appropriate strategies to address forest health-related issues; acquire extramural funding to support extension programming; publish extension numbered publications and peer-reviewed publications, contribute to applied research; and build, maintain, and lead effective partnerships with aligned agencies, organizations and practitioners. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment with faculty, staff, and extension professionals within the Cooperative Extension Service and will be required to build collaborative efforts to address tree health issues in forest, woodland, and urban ecosystems. The position will lead the Forest Health Research and Education Center’s Outreach and Education Team, www.foresthealthcenter.org, and contribute to the Kentucky Forest Health Task Force and the Kentucky Spirits Research Institute. Responsibilities will also include both undergraduate and graduate instruction in the Department and support of the Natural Resources and Environmental Science undergraduate program.

The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources is one of fourteen academic departments in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. The Department provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in forestry and natural resources and offers the only Society of American Foresters accredited forestry program in Kentucky. The Department has a strong continuing education effort that is a part of the Cooperative Extension Service with offices in each of Kentucky’s 120 counties. Faculty of the Department conducts basic and applied research to support our understanding and use of forest ecosystems. Research emphasis areas include silviculture and forest operations, wildlife ecology and conservation biology, hydrology watershed management, and forest health and restoration. The Department has significant off-campus resources available to support its mission including the nationally recognized Robinson Forest located in eastern Kentucky.
