The Forest and Wildlife Research Center/College of Forest Resources, Mississippi State University seeks to fill a 9 or a 12- month, tenure-track, fulltime, Assistant Professor position with research, teaching and service/outreach responsibilities in the area of biobased composites, within the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts (formerly Forest Products). Incumbent will participate in all aspects of the department’s comprehensive research, teaching, and service program. Incumbent is expected to develop and conduct a program of research in forest- and other bio-products/wood science and technology with an emphasis on wood/biobased composites and engineered wood. Candidate is expected to vigorously pursue extramural funding through scientific-based competitive grants, industrial grants and contracts, etc. and to build a nationally recognized program. Service and outreach will be pursued via a combination of activities at the university, professional associations, site visits, short courses and workshops, web-based communication, and written reports, etc. Incumbent will teach undergraduate and graduate courses such as biobased composites, advise students, assist curriculum development, and carry other departmental responsibilities as appropriate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Incumbent will devote a major portion of their time advising M.S. and Ph.D.-level graduate students; securing extramural programmatic funding, and publishing scholarly works.
The incumbent will be expected to provide professional service within the university and with external stakeholders such as scientific organizations, professional associations, manufacturing entities, trade organizations, etc.
In addition, the incumbent will actively participate in collaborations within the department, college, and university as well as with external stakeholders such as industry, other universities, government and nongovernmental organizations, etc. to advance the tripartite land-grant mission are expected.
The successful candidate for this tenure-track, full-time 9- or 12 month appointment must possess a Ph.D. at the time of appointment from an accredited institution of higher learning in either Wood Science / Forest- Bio-Products or an allied scientific discipline such as engineering, biology, microbiology, marketing, business, or other as appropriate.
The applicant must demonstrate strong communication skills and will be expected to develop a national reputation in sustainable bioproducts as well as maintain a focus on adding value to state- and regional based stakeholders.
Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Two years of experience is preferred in forest products/sustainable bioproducts or a related field with respect to proposing; securing extramural funding; conducting, producing, and publishing applied and basic research results.
Knowledge, skills and abilities: Incumbent should be adept with current forms of computer applications related to research, teaching, and service activities.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Office, Laboratory, Classroom. Physical requirements will be consistent with those associated with the incumbent’s research program.
