The McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program has provided capacity funding to state agricultural experiment stations for more than 60 years, enabling university forestry programs to maintain long-term research infrastructure, conduct studies across multiple growing seasons, and train the next generation of forest scientists. Unlike competitive grants that fund specific projects, McIntire-Stennis capacity funds allow universities to build and sustain research programs addressing regional forest challenges—from regenerating oak-hickory forests in Appalachia to managing fire-adapted ecosystems in the West to understanding urban forest dynamics across growing metropolitan areas.
This repository showcases current McIntire-Stennis research across NAUFRP member institutions. Each university determines its research priorities based on regional needs, available expertise, and strategic focus areas. Projects range from fundamental forest ecology and silviculture to wood products engineering, wildlife habitat management, forest economics, and ecosystem services valuation. Together, these investigations build the scientific foundation for sustainable forest management, inform policy decisions affecting public and private forestlands, and prepare students for careers addressing complex challenges facing forest resources.
